Though 2020 was a heavy year for many, today we wanted to focus on the positives that came out of this year.

Aside from getting to visit and witness some spectacular new restaurants and business concepts come to life this year, Matt and I personally went through a handful notable life events. In 2020,

  • We adopted the sweetest puppy, Koda.
  • We moved back to Houston after being in Fort Worth for a year.
  • Matt started his first year of his Radiology residency.
  • We explored our own backyard and got to travel around Texas, including Big Bend National Park.
  • I quit my day job to pursue my passion full-time.
  • We got to stand next to some of our best friends from college get married.

To say 2020 has been a wild ride would be quite the understatement.

As always, we are incredibly grateful for this online community and platform, and we are so excited for what's to come in the new year!

Before we sign off for the year 2020, we would love to share our top 12 favorite restaurants and bars that we visited this year! In no particular order, here they are:

ZOA Moroccan Kitchen

ZOA was the very first Moroccan restaurant we've ever visited, and it was quite the experience! Love how flavorful the food is and love their fast serve concept.

What to order: Fez or Marrakesh

Koffeteria

One of my favorite coffee shop finds of the year - Koffeteria. They have some inventive pastries that are to die for.

What to order: Pastries

Secret Garden

The only cocktail bar that made our favorites list! Secret Garden quickly became one of our favorite spots to grab a pretty cocktail on a beautiful outdoor patio.

What to order: The Rose Felici

Taco Fuego

The food truck that we discovered birria tacos, and it changed our worlds! We are huge fans, especially their birria ramen.

What to order: Birria Tacos, Birria Ramen

City Orchard Cidery

We love this cider bar. Not only is their cider delicious, but they have an expansive patio!

What to order: Cider Flight

Korny Vibes

We were blown away by Korny Vibes. Their food is 100% vegan and 100% amazing. If you haven't tried it, you'll be pleasantly surprised (even if you're not vegan)!

What to order: Vegan Fried Chickn

Savoy Restaurant

We stumbled across Savoy this year, and we were so happy we did! They serve up Indo-Pak cuisine, and my mouth still waters at the thought of their Butter Chicken!

What to order: Goat Biryani, Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan

Margaux's Oyster Bar

We cannot speak more highly of Margaux's. Every single dish that we tried there was spectacular. Not to mention, the special coast oysters they have cannot be found anywhere else in Houston!

What to order: Smoked Trout Roe Water Puff, Oysters, Crab & Artichoke Dip

Luce Ave Coffee Roasters - Heights

Our other favorite coffee shop! They opened up their second location this year in the Heights, and it is so cool. The two-story space is beautiful and they have some innovative drinks that feature black charcoal.

What to order: Black Island

Be More Pacific

Be More Pacific was one of the handful of Filipino restaurants that we tried after falling into a little Filipino food kick this year. While Matt is relatively familiar with Filipino food since his childhood best friend is Filipino, I didn't have too much experience with Filipino food, and neither of us had ever been to a Filipino restaurant before this year. Needless to say, we were extremely impressed here and look forward to returning to try more of their food. We loved the atmosphere and the colorful dishes that tasted just as good as they looked.

What to order: Filipino BBQ, Silog, Kare Kare, Adobo

Hando

Matt's first hand roll bar experience was this year at Hando. We celebrated his birthday here! It's the perfect date night spot with good sushi and cocktails.

What to order: 4 Piece Handokase

Acadian Coast

This one snuck in at the last second! They opened up late this year, and we are so glad they did! Their crab cakes and boudin balls are out of this world, AND they have a killer Frozen Hurricane that's not overly sugary like you would expect. Oh, and of course, their beignets are an absolute must.

What to order: Seafood Gumbo, Boudin Balls, Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, Hurricane, Beignets

Hope you all have a happy and safe New Year's. If you haven't been to any of these places, they should definitely be added to your bucket list for the new year.

A big cheers to 2021!
